6/23/2006 ~ A Marriage That Will Not Fail

The American home is in trouble.
                                                        └─> This is not news.
At the Sermon on the Mound, Jesus spoke of attitudes.
Resolving attitudes can help us all.


Lusts, Fears, Jealousies, Angers, Greediness’s, Self Centered Ideals, Sadness ...

... unless your righteousness exceeds the righteousness of the scribes ...
~ Matthew 5:20


Do You Believe God is the Best All?

The wise man is he who hears and then does the will of God.


Right attitudes are necessary to enter the kingdom of God. <─┐                     
"... enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father ..."
~ Matthew 7:21


God ordained this for the happiness of man. <─┐              
... a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, ...
~ Genesis 2:18-25


We need council from Godly people.

Blessed is the man Who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly, ...
~ Psalm 1:1


Godly = Relationship with God

Our relationship has to be genuine.

1. Be the person who wants to go to heaven more than anything else.  
2. Marry someone who wants to go to heaven more than anything else.

Do not murder people but build them up


● Do Not Murder            

... and whoever murders will be in danger of the judgment. ...
~ Matthew 5:21-22


┌─> It's about attitudes.      
... casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against
the knowledge of God, ... ~ 2nd Corinthians 10:5


Whoever hates his brother is a murderer, ... ~ 1st John 3:15

A soft answer turns away wrath, But a harsh word stirs up anger.
~ Proverbs 15:1


Soft words with kindness in mind.

... be kind to one another, tender-hearted, forgiving one another, ...
~ Ephesians 4:31-32


"Be angry, and do not sin": do not let the sun go down on your wrath, ...
~ Ephesians 4:26


Don’t forget to guard your anger.

A fool vents all his feelings, But a wise man holds them back.
~ Proverbs 29:11


... be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. ...

Many times we treat our partners the worst.

... Husbands, love your wives and do not be bitter toward them.

Stop murder before it gets there.

    ● Do Not Commit Adultery

"... whoever looks at a woman to lust for her has already committed

Cast off your lust.

For as he thinks in his heart, so is he. ... ~ Proverbs 23:7

Keep your heart with all diligence, For out of it spring the issues of life.

... out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries,

We need not allow bad things into our minds and hearts.
We need to keep our mind pure.


... Walk in the Spirit, and you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. ...

Restraint or Free Course?

Learn to flee ...

... he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body.

Abstain from every form of evil. ~ 1st Thessalonians 5:22

Control your thoughts.

● Do Not Divorce           

... whoever divorces his wife for any reason except sexual immorality ...
~ Matthew 5:31-32


Human laws allow much more promiscuities where God’s word does not!

... whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries
another, commits adultery; ... ~ Matthew 19:6-9


Jesus said marriage is permanent except for one cause:
ONE EXCEPTION - “Except for fornication.”


"... what God has joined together, let not man separate." ~ Mark 10:5-9

... Do not be rash with your mouth, And let not your heart utter anything
hastily ... ~ Ecclesiastes 5:2-7


Whoever guards his mouth and tongue Keeps his soul from troubles.
~ Proverbs 21:23


God wants you to remember your vows and to know He hates divorce.

... the LORD God of Israel says That He hates divorce, ... ~ Malachi 2:14-16

... unless you are converted and become as little children, ...

"... unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God."

Repent and keep to the pureness of you commitment.

~ Resolution not Destruction / Discussion not Threats.

● Avoid Deception         

... You shall not swear falsely, but shall perform your oaths to the Lord. ...
~ Matthew 5:33-37


Maintain integrity and honor, stay able to be trusted.
Trust is essential to a successful marriage.


Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds,
... ~ Colossians 3:9


... putting away lying, "Let each one of you speak truth with his neighbor," ...
~ Ephesians 4:25


... speaks the truth in his heart; He who does not backbite with his tongue, ...
~ Psalm 15:1-5


● Avoid Retaliation        

"... But whoever slaps you on your right cheek, turn the other to him also."
~ Matthew 5:38-39


Vindictive attitudes must not be allowed.

Repay no one evil for evil. Have regard for good things in the sight of all ...
~ Romans 12:17-21


 ● Avoid Conditional Love

... pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you, ...
~ Matthew 5:43-48


Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church ...
~ Ephesians 5:25


... love their children, to be discreet, chaste, homemakers, good,
obedient to their own husbands, ... ~ Titus 2:3-5


... does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; ...
~ 1st Corinthians 13:4-8


Is your love for Cars, Looks, Money or Honest Human ties?
Are your cares shallow or deep?


Let love be without hypocrisy. Abhor what is evil. Cling to what is good.
~ Romans 12:9


● Avoid Hypocrisy          

"... may have glory from men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward."
~ Matthew 6:1-2


"And when you pray, you shall not be like hypocrites. ..." ~ Matthew 6:5

... do not be like the hypocrites, with a sad countenance. ...
~ Matthew 6:16


● Avoid Materialism       

"Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust
destroy and where thieves break in and steal; ..." ~ Matthew 6:19-34


What is it you value?

... "Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one's life does not consist
in the abundance of the things he possesses." ... ~ Luke 12:15-21


Money can buy a house, but not a home.

Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.
~ Colossians 3:2


... "Blessed is he who shall eat bread in the kingdom of God!" ...
~ Luke 14:15-21


Money can buy cosmetics, but not real beauty.

"... gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give
in exchange for his soul?" ~ Matthew 16:26


● Avoid Petty Criticism  

"Judge not, that you be not judged. For with what judgment you judge,
you will be judged; ..." ~ Matthew 7:1-5


The tongue of the righteous is choice silver; ... ~ Proverbs 10:20

Set a guard, O Lord, over my mouth; Keep watch over the door of my lips.
~ Psalm 141:3

Being nice goes a long way.
Can you have the right attitude for a happy home?
The problem is sin and we need to repent for wrong attitudes.


Do not murder
Do not commit adultery
Do not divorce
Avoid deception
Avoid retaliation
Avoid conditional love
Avoid hypocrisy
Avoid materialism
Avoid petty criticism
Practice golden rule

A soft heart endures while a biting one flees.
To live is to love. To hate is to die.
