5/1/2005 ~ Tradition


Matthew 15:1-20
Articles, Collectables, Hand-Me-Downs, Dinners together, etc.
\_ It dosen't take long to establish one.

People are sensitive to tradition.
Hat on or off, Color or even shoes left on.
\_ Some get upset.

Even the cliché, "Cleanliness is Godliness."

'... gods of silver or gods of gold you shall not make ...' ~ Exodus 20:20-23
└─ Certain positions and traditional demands of God are clear.

... you hold the tradition of men - the washing of pitchers ... ~ Mark 7:3-13
└─ tradition comes up as a routine.

Just because it is logical dosen't put it to the test of God.
More concerning should be those things of the heart.
                                         ♥
No one alive on earth has seen past the grave.
Tradition for Christians is we follow Him who has risen from the grave.

Individuals successfully following God
has blessed future generations with affirming traditions.

Do not rebuke an older man, but exhort him ... ~ 1st Timothy 5:1-2
└─ there are many back burner parents.

We must look for tradition from the Word of God.

... hold the traditions which you were taught, ... ~ 2nd Thessalonians 2:15
└─ keep in step or mark

... may the Lord of peace Himself give you peace always ...
~ 2nd Thessalonians 3:16

What upsets people is alligning and agreeing with what to do.

TRADITION:
---> Word
---> Examples
---> Handed Down

... and saw in me, those do, and the God of peace will be with you.
~ Philippians 4:9

... even Barnabas was carried away with their hypocrisy. ~ Galatians 2:7-13
└─ some depict bad examples such as despising gentiles

... we are all present before God, to hear all the things commanded you ...
~ Acts 10:33-34

... For the promise is to you and to your children, ... ~ Acts 2:38-39

In example, what is approved by God.

... as you eat this bread and drink this cup, ... ~ 1st Corinthians 11:26-29
\_ Practicing the Lord's Supper in His church is proper traditional worship.

Remember What JESUS Did.

... who through Him believe in God, who raised Him from the dead ...
~ 1st Peter 1:21

If it contradicts what the Father says, don't do it.

"And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions ..." ~ Matthew 6:7
└─ repetitive prayers go useless and are against God's tradition.

Children, obey your parents in the Lord, ... ~ Ephesians 6:1-4
└─ obeying one's parents is a tradition of God.

When children rebel against instruction it is a test of their character.

Do not remove the ancient landmark ... ~ Proverbs 22:28
└─ build for and with enduring respect.

Tradition should not be because of the extent of Time.
IT should be of God.

... each one will receive his own reward according to his own labor.
~ 1st Corinthians 3:2-8

Covenants change.
The order of Service is not written in stone.
As things change, we must adapt.

"No one sews a piece of unshrunk cloth on an old garment; ..." ~ Mark 2:21-22
└─ as civilization ages, traditions must adapt so as to be useful or workable.

If our tradition conflicts with Christ's, it needs to be changed.

... contend earestly for the faith which was once for all delivered ...
~ Jude 1:3-4

... foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus Christ Himself
being the chief cornerstone, ... ~ Ephesians 2:20

                                                        Man's new ideas, carnival traditions.
                                                                        ↑
The foundation is at the beginning, not the end.
                  ↓
                    God's Word, Book of Life.

Matthew 15 shows a people more interested in serving themselves
rather than God.

As new generations rise, they make their own choices.

This can be difficult for parents
but parents must remain open for correction and or change
if it enhances all of our approaches to God.

Message for everyone should be: "Go with the Lord."

Ritual often overlooks the meaning or importance of an act.
Traditions should go from bad to good.
Give up what is proven wrong.
We can all become stronger and more efficient.
