9/22/2010 ~ Real Change

WE HAVE TO CHANGE

... the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible,
and we shall be changed. ... ~ 1st Corinthians 15:50-54

IF WE DO NOT CHANGE WHILE MORTAL

We are declaring that God does not care about who we are or what we do.
We are declaring that we are already everything that God wants.
Perhaps we are boldly declaring that there is no God.

CHANGE OF REPENTANCE

~ A basic message of the Gospel

John the Baptist

... "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand!" ~ Matthew 3:1-2

Jesus

"... Repent, and believe in the gospel." ~ Mark 1:14-15

"... unless you repent you will all likewise perish." ~ Luke 13:3

"... unless you repent you will all likewise perish." ~ Luke 13:5

Apostles

So they went out and preached that people should repent. ~ Mark 6:12

... "Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name
of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; ... ~ Acts 2:38

Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, ...
~ Acts 3:19

"Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked,
but now commands all men everywhere to repent, ..." ~ Acts 17:30

"... repent, turn to God, and do works befitting repentance." ~ Acts 26:19-20

We all sin, how we respond to our sin separates us.
Change of behavior is a requirement for God.

"... bear fruits worthy of repentance, ..." ~ Luke 3:8

"... should repent, turn to God, and do works befitting repentance."
~ Acts 26:20

Sorrow

... your sorrow led to repentance. For you were made sorry in a godly manner,
... ~ 2nd Corinthians 7:9-10

... I shall mourn for many who have sinned before and have not repented ...
~ 2nd Corinthians 12:21

REPENTANCE

God’s desire for all men.

... not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.
~ 2nd Peter 3:9

Required of all men.

"... but now commands all men everywhere to repent, ..." ~ Acts 17:30

Required to become a Christian.

"... what shall we do?" Then Peter said to them, "Repent, and let every
one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ ..." ~ Acts 2:37-38

~ 2nd Corinthians 7:9-11

... mourn for many who have sinned before and have not repented of
the uncleanness, fornication, and lewdness ... ~ 2nd Corinthians 12:21

Required even of those who are righteous.

... a devout man and one who feared God ... gave alms generously
to the people, and prayed to God always. ~ Acts 10:1-2

... "Then God has also granted to the Gentiles repentance to life." ~ Acts 11:18

CHANGE OF GROWTH

And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed
by the renewing of your mind, ... ~ Romans 12:2

... in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. For he who lacks
these things is shortsighted, even to blindness, ... ~ 2nd Peter 1:5-11

... I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus
has also laid hold of me. ~ Philippians 3:12

I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call
of God in Christ Jesus. ~ Philippians 3:14

Christianity is a pursuit.
It is a bond in Christ, not to a preacher or any other individual.
Truly, life is a staircase and each of us chooses which way to go.

But you, O man of God, flee these things and pursue righteousness,
godliness, faith, love, patience, gentleness. ~ 1st Timothy 6:11

Flee also youthful lusts; but pursue righteousness, faith, love, peace
with those who call on the Lord out of a pure heart. ~ 2nd Timothy 2:22

Christianity is not a parking lot ...
Christianity is a HIGHway

... the way of the upright is a highway. ~ Proverbs 15:19

Search me, O God, and know my heart; ... And lead me in the way everlasting.
~ Psalms 139:23-24

Saying you need to grow is not the same thing as growing.
Even if you have accomplished something, you still must grow.

... we urge and exhort in the Lord Jesus that you
should abound more and more, ... ~ 1st Thessalonians 4:1

... we urge you, brethren, that you increase more and more; ...
~ 1st Thessalonians 4:9-10

HOW DO WE CHANGE?

1. Recognize you can change

... "Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand." ~ Matthew 4:17

2. Humility

... "If you were blind, you would have no sin; but now you say,
'We see.' Therefore your sin remains." ~ John 9:41

3. Count all things as lost

... count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus ...
~ Philippians 3:4-11

4. Keep your eye on the goal

... reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal
for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus. ~ Philippians 3:6-14

5. Listen

... "He who has ears to hear, let him hear!" ~ Mark 4:9-12

6. Self-examination

Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith.
Test yourselves. ... ~ 2nd Corinthians 13:5

7. Diligence

... giving all diligence, ... ~ 2nd Peter 1:5

... be even more diligent to make your call and election sure, ...
~ 2nd Peter 1:10

you may receive the promise: ... ~ Hebrews 10:35-36

... tribulation produces perseverance; and perseverance, character; ...
~ Romans 5:3-4

AVOID BAD CHANGE

Cancer is uncontrolled growth.
It is a disease. It is a tumor. Nonetheless, it is a change.
Do not let adversity overcome you.
We should not change in all respects.
We must stay the same in some things.
Those things approved of by the Lord's word.

... be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord,
knowing that your labor is not in vain in the Lord. ... ~ 1st Corinthians 15:58

Watch, stand fast in the faith, be brave, be strong. ~ 1st Corinthians 16:13

... if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than
what we have preached to you, let him be accursed. ... ~ Galatians 1:6-9

In traditions handed down ...

... stand fast and hold the traditions which you were taught,
whether by word or our epistle. ~ 2nd Thessalonians 2:15

Some have stood firm in what
they have always done - rather than in what God has taught.
Some, by seeking to change, have attacked the traditions taught by God.

We must be careful to grow where we should grow
and stay where we should stay.

God delivered us in His plan, not ours.
Jesus did not call apostles, He called men that became apostles

... "Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men." ~ Matthew 4:19

... Saul increased all the more in strength, and confounded the Jews who
dwelt in Damascus, proving that this Jesus is the Christ. ~ Acts 9:22

To be a Christian, we must change to become better than we were before.
Let us always properly repent of our sins.
Let us press on every day.

HOW DO WE CHANGE?
1. Recognize you can change
2. Humility
3. Count all things as lost
4. Keep your eye on the goal
5. Listen
6. Self-examination
7. Diligence
8. Perseverance

REPENT AND BE SAVED!
