SERMON MENU SELECTIONS

10/15/2006 ~ Let's Not Be Hypocrites


... do not do according to their works; for they say, and do not do. ...
~ Matthew 23:1-12


These Pharisees were proud sitting in the seat of Moses.

... have you not shown partiality among yourselves, and become judges
with evil thoughts? ... ~ James 2:1-9


We are instructed not to show partiality.

... ought to wash one another's feet. For I have given you an example, ...
~ John 13:12-17


Jesus showed us to care for others in service.

But all their works they do to be seen by men. ... ~ Matthew 23:5

... a woman who had a flow of blood for twelve years came from behind
and touched the hem of His garment. ~ Matthew 9:20


It is the inner man that makes stature, not the outer garments.

... tassels on the corners of their garments throughout their generations, ...
~ Numbers 15:38


The Pharisees garments went from remembrance of God to charms.

"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! ..." ~ Matthew 23:23

They were out to impress themselves demanding respect.

"Do not call anyone on earth your father; for One is your Father,
He who is in heaven." ~ Matthew 23:9

└─> There is only one author of your religion.

They emphasized those things that were not so important.


"... Fools and blind! For which is greater, the gold
or the temple that sanctifies the gold? ..." ~ Matthew 23:13-24


"... everyone who exalts himself will be humbled,
and he who humbles himself will be exalted." ~ Luke 18:9-14


It will be the humble that will be justified.

...But avoid foolish disputes, genealogies, contentions, and strivings
about the law; for they are unprofitable and useless. ... ~ Titus 3:9-11


We are instructed not to quibble.

... No one engaged in warfare entangles himself with the affairs of this life,
that he may please him who enlisted him as a soldier. ... ~ 2nd Timothy 2:1-7


God calls, can you hear?
Don’t argue over the truth, see the larger picture.


"... have neglected the weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy
and faith. ..." ~ Matthew 23:23


They emphasized the external.

"... outwardly appear righteous to men, but inside you are
full of hypocrisy and lawlessness." ~ Matthew 23:25-28


It looked good but it was a pompous abomination.

"... what is highly esteemed among men is an abomination in the sight of God."
~ Luke 16:15


We have no idea what Jesus looked like on the outside,
We can only see Him through the worth that was in Him.
Those who truly believe see Him.


"Blessed are the pure in heart, For they shall see God." ~ Matthew 5:8

... circumcision is that of the heart, in the Spirit, not in the letter;
whose praise is not from men but from God. ~ Romans 2:25-29


Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which
no one will see the Lord: ... ~ Hebrews 12:14-15


Mistakes to avoid.
● PROUD
● SWALLOWED A CAMEL
● HYPOCRITES
● MURDERERS

... whom you murdered between the temple and the alter. ...
~ Matthew 23:29-36


Hate creates a wall between you and God.

Whoever hates his brother is a murderer, ... ~ 1st John 3:15

... who does not love his brother whom he has seen, how can he love God
whom he has not seen? ... ~ 1st John 4:20-21


If one is not open for correction,
then the true word of God is not being followed.


                     The Pharisees had nothing on the inside. <─┐
... as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, but you were not willing! ...
~ Matthew 23:37-39


What is it you believe from the inside?

... throughout the time of your stay here in fear; ... ~ 1st Peter 1:17-19

Let us not do it for ourselves but for the Glory of Jesus Christ.
Stand right with God and not exclusively for man.
