STUDIES FROM BRETHREN IN CHRIST

SERMON MENU SELECTIONS

11/7/2008 ~ The Good News

~ Handbook for living.
Ignorance is the enemy of the Christian faith.
● It is a teaching religion.
It needs to be understood to make decisions on it, from it.
Do you thirst for the truth?

... being alienated from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is
in them, because of the blindness of their heart; ... ~ Ephesians 4:18

There are grave consequences for not knowing Jesus.
The truth needs to motivate our actions lest it hardens one’s heart.
People turn their back on the Gospel because of contradictory
things being taught outside Scripture by denominations.

SOMEBODY IS WRONG

So many ask, How do I become a true Christian?

... God is light and in Him is no darkness at all. If we say that we have
fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie ... ~ 1st John 1:5-6

For all that is Holy, God is where light is, there is no darkness.

The Problem:

● God is LightSinless
● We walk in the DarknessSinful

Whoever commits sin also commits lawlessness, and sin is lawlessness.
~ 1st John 3:4

"... of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day
that you eat of it you shall surely die." ~ Genesis 2:17

Humans fell from fellowship with God.

... passed from death to life, because we love the brethren.
He who does not love his brother abides in death. ~ 1st John 3:14

Death is separation from God and Love.

... your iniquities have separated you from your God; ... ~ Isaiah 59:1-2

Sin separates us because it is darkness.

... for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, ... ~ Romans 3:23

... death spread to all men, because all sinned - ~ Romans 5:12

Sin is something you do more to yourself, not others.

SEPARATION FROM GOD = DARKNESS

How can a sinner be reconciled to a holy God?

Results of sin:
● Separation from God
● Separation from our fellow man (Cain & Abel)
● Separation from creation (ground was cursed)
● Separation from ourselves (lost-ness)

           Sound familiar? <─┐
Where do I belong, Why am I here?

Our rest  belongs in God.

... I go to prepare a place for you. ... ~ John 14:2-3

If you do not let God into your heart you will never be fulfilled.

... in unapproachable light, whom no man has seen or can see,
to whom be honor and everlasting power. Amen. ~ 1st Timothy 6:16

God is greater than any of us could ever fathom.

You are of purer eyes than to behold evil, ... ~ Habakkuk 1:13

We have what appears to be an insurmountable standoff ~
● How a banished sinner can be reconciled to a Holy God.
● How can sin be removed to have fellowship with God?
Only Christ can give us the answer to free us of sin.

... Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, ... ~ 1st Timothy 1:15

The Answer does not lie within us.

Our Savior From Sin = His Sacrifice on the Cross

... but we preach Christ crucified, to the Jews a stumbling block
and to the Greeks foolishness, ... ~ 1st Corinthians 1:23

Jesus was born to die that we might live.

"... for this purpose I came to this hour." ~ John 12:27

... the time had come for Him to be received up, ... ~ Luke 9:51

"For this is My blood of the new covenant, which is shed
for many for the remission of sins." ~ Matthew 26:28

... We have turned, every one, to his own way; And the LORD
has laid on Him the iniquity of us all. ~ Isaiah 53:6

┌─> A sin offering for us to be forgiving.
... who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become
the righteousness of God in Him. ~ 2nd Corinthians 5:21

... who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we,
having died to sins, might live for righteousness ... ~ 1st Peter 2:24

God gave us the way to live righteously.

... "It is finished!" And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit. ~ John 19:30

... the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom;
and the earth quaked, and the rocks were split, ... ~ Matthew 27:51

To be reunited with God.

"... whom God raised up, having loosed the pains of death, because
it was not possible that He should be held by it." ~ Acts 2:24

A Way to be Forgiven = The Good News

Apostles’ plea for truth to be known. <─┐
... though God were pleading through us: we implore you on Christ's behalf,
be reconciled to God. ... ~ 2nd Corinthians 5:18-21

  ● RECONCILIATION
            ● GRACE

"... received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to
the gospel of the grace of God." ~ Acts 20:24

For by grace you have been saved through faith, and not of yourselves, it
is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. ~ Ephesians 2:8-9

So then faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.
~ Romans 10:17

What must one do?
Man in himself can do nothing.
God will not force anyone to be saved.
His love is a gift of free will to us each.
He protects our free will unendingly.
Believe.

1. Acknowledge the problem

... for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, ... ~ Romans 3:23

2. Believe in the answer

"Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name
under heaven given among men by which we must be saved." ~ Acts 4:12

Jesus said to him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life.
No one comes to the Father except through Me." ~ John 14:6

3. Open the door to the answer

... If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him
and dine with him, and he with Me." ~ Revelation 3:20

Jesus is at the door of each of our hearts.
~ Accept Him as your cure.
How does one open the door?
          ● Repent of your sins - Problem

Then Peter said to them, "Repent, and let every one of you be baptized
in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; ..." ~ Acts 2:38

Repent therefore and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out,
so that times of refreshing may come ... ~ Acts 3:19

                    ● Confess Christ as Lord - The Answer

... if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart
that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. ~ Romans 10:9

We need to confess Him everyday, always.

Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the
name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, ~ Matthew 28:19

  ↕
WHAT JESUS SAID!
  ↕

"He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does
not believe will be condemned." ~ Mark 16:16

           ● Be Baptized – Problem/Answer

~ Because you believe He is.
Baptism is certainly controversial among religions today.
Does not the Bible clearly teach it?
      ● Into His death/resurrection

... us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death?
Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism ... ~ Romans 6:3-5

~ Washes away sins.

For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
~ Galatians 3:27

... much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit
offered Himself without spot to God, cleanse ... ~ Hebrews 9:13-14

and a human Implementation of disobedience.

from an evil conscience and our bodies washed ... ~ Hebrews 10:21-22

the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God),
through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, ... ~ 1st Peter 3:21
